TNR saves lives.
Trap, neuter, return (TNR) is a humane way of controlling feral cat populations. Cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, then returned to the location where they were found. Populations of sterilized cats tend to decline in size over time. Spaying and neutering greatly reduces nuisance behavior - fighting, yowling and other noise associated with mating stops almost entirely. Neutered males will no longer spray to mark territory, and there is less roaming. The “fixed” cats are healthier and less likely to spread feline diseases. Meanwhile, rodent control is maintained by the cats' continued presence.
Ready for some cat math?
An unspayed female cat, her mate, and all of their offspring producing 2 litters per year, with 2.8 surviving kittens, can produce 11.6 Million kittens in 9 years!
Castaways has trapped, speutered and returned over 4000 cats since 2009.
How does TNR work?
-
Trap
The first step is to safely and humanely trap the animal with minimal stress. We use a variety of trap sizes to ensure success, always prioritizing the safety of the animal.
-
Neuter
Cats are transported to a medical facility where they are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and market with an ear tip to show they have been “speutered”.
-
Return
After they have recovered, the cats are released to the area they came from, where a caretaker provides them with food and shelter. Young kittens and friendly adult cats are placed for adoption.
